Your Dentist Can Help You Fight Obesity

Obesity has become the biggest health concern in the United States today. It has been blamed on the kind of food that Americans eat to how they eat those foods and on the kind of lifestyle that Americans have. Diet programs and fitness mechanics have sprouted. Some obese Americans have successfully lost those flabs while others have yet to lose those bulges. Some people try to manage their weight but without much success. According to an Dentist Amarillo oral care expert, the reason why most Americans have difficulty losing weight is because the way Americans eat is far different from how, say, a Japanese or a French enjoys a meals. “We tend to eat on the go. We eat like we’re in a hurry all the time that we wedge quick and instant meals into our busy lives,” the dentist said. He added that of this kind of eating doesn’t stop, then obesity would soon replace smoking as the number one cause of preventable death in the United States.

Dentists in Amarillo said that based on studies done by weight management specialists, culture and lifestyle play a significant role in the way Americans eat compared to others. In France or Japan, for instance, having meals is an important part of the daily ritual. They are seen as events that are meant to be enjoyed. Thus, the people there eat more slowly and they savor their meals. “It’s an occasion for family and friends to get together. That’s why they are expected to take things slowly as they catch up with each other. Meals are not hurried, unlike in the United States where it has to be, more often than not, always on the go. In the process, it takes time before the food can be digested properly,” said a dental expert from Dental Amarillo.

Taking smaller bites, according to dentists from Dentistry Amarillo, and chewing the food carefully allows us to eat less because chewing slowly makes digestion easier. If we eat and chew slowly, it gives our bodies a chance to feel full before we eat more than we need. Our bodies need about 15 to 20 minutes to realize that we are already full. “Eating slowly is good for our general well-being. If we eat too fast, our bodies wouldn’t have ample time to process in our thoughts the idea that we are already full. That’s why if we eat in a hurry, it’s as if we are not yet full. Then we start to feel that we are hungry so we grab another bite again,” said a dentist in Pullman.

We’ve been told and reminded by our mothers when we were young to chew our food well and not gulp it down. To address this problem of gulping huge chunks of food in a hurry, oral care manufacturers have come up with products that allows people, especially those who are obese, to control the amount of food that goes into their mouth. One such product is a weight management tool or a dental appliance, as some people call it. It looks like a retainer but it’s not. What it does is this: You put the tool in your mouth, which is custom-fitted to the roof of your mouth, so that the size of your mouth is temporarily reduced. With this, you are forced to take smaller bites. You only need to put this on every time you would eat. This tool or dental appliance does not interfere with swallowing, although it slightly affects your speech.
