Thoughts On Buying A Digital Camera

Posted By: | Posted On: | Article ID:

Considerations

Broadly speaking, the larger the size of the final image, or print, that you want to produce, the more “megapixels” of resolution you will require. A megapixel is 1,000,000 “pixels” (picture elements, effectively the “building blocks” from which an image is composed), and the more of these a camera has, the more detailed, and well-defined, is the image that it is capable of creating. Standard, 6 by 4 inch prints require, 1, or perhaps 2 Mp, while 10 by 8 inch prints require 7, or 8 Mp and upwards. Higher resolution cameras, however, also offer number of different possible resolutions, so that you can still produce for Internet, or email purposes, without generating huge, unmanageable file sizes.

If you’re a keen photographer, who likes to adjust camera settings on a regular basis, it’s probably a good idea to avoid the very smallest digital cameras, which tend to be quite limited in the adjustments that can be made, and you may also find that repeatedly manipulating tiny buttons and dials is quite tiresome. The Mustek DV4000 Digital Camera, for example, is a multifunction camcorder, small enough, at 8.1 x 6.1 x 3.1 m, to fit into the palm of your hand.

Whichever camera you choose, be prepared for a little extra investment, in the form a larger memory card –
although memory cards, Compact Flash, Smart Media, and the like, are readily available, and inexpensive, you’ll probably find that the one supplied as standard is too small, in capacity, for your liking – and additional rechargeable batteries, and a battery charger, if these aren’t already included in the price of the camera. Rechargeable batteries are more economical, in the long run, than disposable batteries. The Musket DV8200 model, for example, is an 8 Mp camera and camcorder, with internal memory of 32 MB, which can be expanded with SD and MMC cards.

Conclusion

Beware exceeding your digital camera, unless the extra functionality that this affords is something that you absolutely cannot do without – it’s very easy, in the heat of the moment, to be talked into buying a more expensive, “flashy”, model, with functions that you may rarely, or never, use. Take your time, do your research before, and not after, you part with your money, and make sure you get what you want, not what a salesperson wants for you.
