SEO - Should you Do It Yourself?

Posted By: | Posted On: | Article ID:

There are many things to consider when embarking on an SEO campaign, the first being, can we do it ourselves or should we get a professional in. This article will highlight some of the main issues you should think about before making your decision.

The first and probably most important thing to consider is do you have the time to take on your own SEO campaign. When considering this issue there are a few things to think about. Ask yourself the following questions before making the decision:

a. Do you have enough time to make your site search engine friendly? Plan on spending at least 3 hours on this, if your website is already in great shape, and up to 25 hours (or more) for sites that may need a complete overhaul. The average time spent on this type of work by companies is 3 - 6 hours.

b. Will you have this time to work on getting your website SEO friendly in the next week? If is quite common that if people to not start work on their SEO very quickly (within the next 5 business days), the project ends up being delayed indefinitely. You need a clear scheduled start date for your SEO work.

c. Can your business afford to "lend" this time to SEO without experiencing some other negative impact? If the time is not truly extra time you have, then you would be "borrowing" the time from another area of your business. Can you do that without harming another area of your business?

d. If your SEO project becomes bigger than you initially anticipated, will you have the time and attention to continue dedicating to it until completion?

If you answer no to most of these questions then you should probably not be taking on your own SEO project and should consider employing a professional. However if you have answered yes to these questions and are looking to take on your SEO project then you will need to consider the following:

a. Work out what your time is worth per hour and compare that to what you would be paying to professional. This will enable you to pick the most cost effective approach.

b. Will you be able to recognise if your own efforts are not working and be able to change your option at that time.

c. You must commit to educating yourself and learning all that you need to know to truly run a successful SEO campaign. Inadvertently spamming, or using a questionable technique can result in a temporary loss of results or a permanent ban from the engines. Be 100% sure you aren't endangering your business.

There are a few other things to consider before taking on a project and these include considering your experience at writing copy and whether you will be able to write something that will work with your efforts. Also think about what you know already about SEO and whether you will be able to get tools that will help you in keyword selection, site analysis, reporting and current industry information. In addition, how do you plan to stay in touch with SEO trends and knowing what is the best thing to do at any one time.

After you have read all of this and are now thinking you are not sure whether you should be going ahead with your own SEO work. Then it is best to bring in the professionals but before you do, consider these things:

1. Make sure you know what questions to ask the SEO firm you hire.

2. Plan on spending anywhere from £300 - £1000.00 per month to run a decent SEO campaign.

Make sure you do your research and have considered all the options before you make a decision this should make sure you are going in with as much information as possible.
