Read the Label First: Eating Some Healthy Food Can Damage Your Teeth

We may not know it but there are some healthy foods that we eat that actually do more harm to our teeth. An oral care specialist from Cosmetic Dentist Austin, who has handled patients whose teeth have been badly damaged because the supplements that they were taking contained chemicals that harm their teeth, said that more often than not the culprits are those things which you think are improving your health. “I’ve had a patient who can’t figure out why she has developed so many cavities when in fact she been brushing her teeth regularly and maintaining not just proper oral health but her overall health,” said the dentist. “It turns out, when we examined her teeth and diagnosed her eating habits, it was those antacids that were responsible for her cavities.

Dentists in Austin said that antacids, the heartburn-soothing tablets, contain a lot sugar. One patient, an antacid addict, said that he took about six or eight a day without realizing that they actually contained sugar that damaged his teeth. “I thought they were doing me good, but they weren’t,” said the patient. The dentists said the some supplements which espouse teeth whitening in Austin might also contain chemicals that have sugar in it.

“The important thing is to read the label. When in doubt, consult your dentist,” said an oral care expert from Cosmetic Dentistry Austin. He said that he and his colleagues have discovered that many of their patients who take supplements that are supposedly good for their health do not realize that many of those supplements contain chemicals that can badly damage the teeth, especially the enamel, and that they can lead to more oral cavities.

“There are lots of supplements that contain sugar. Sure, they’re good for our health but read the label because even if they can do wonders for your health, they might have the opposite effect on your teeth. What most people don’t realize. That’s why they need to consult their dentist if they are in doubt. I would suggest that if there are alternatives available then go for those alternatives,” said a dentist from Dental Care Austin.

Orthodontists in Austin said that antacids, breath mints, sore throat lozenges, and cough drops all contain sugar in one form or another. These substances are usually called sucrose or dextrose in the labels, not sugar. Some would even say that they contain corn syrup when in fact that corn syrup is simply sugar in disguised. These sugars are used by the bacteria in the mouth to produce an acid that eats the enamel of the teeth. For instance, if you chew or suck on mints for several minutes, enough acids would be produced to damage your teeth’s enamel. Long before those mint gums are gone, the acids that have been produced have already found its way to your enamel to destroy them. These mints are usually held in the area of the teeth where the thinnest area of the enamel is found.

They said that if you want to keep your teeth healthy choose sugar-free versions of those mints or other supplements and limit your intakes to just one or two a day. Also, brush and floss your teeth regularly and rinse your mouth with water. Sodas that have sugar also do the same damage to your teeth even if we sip the soda little by little. Even drinking bottled water is unhealthy rather than having tap water. That’s because bottled water, which have been treated, do not have the same fluoride content like those found in tap water.
