Hermit crabs are unique and interesting animals. They are found in the wild, but it is now possible to own one as a pet. Before you purchase one, however, you must look at all the preparations that need to be made and the supplies and other necessities that you must have before you purchase a hermit crab. Hermit crab care is not difficult. You just need to know a few hermit crab facts to get you started. Some of the facts that will help you take care of your hermit crab are habitat requirements, food and water requirements, and other supplies that are needed.

The first things you have to look at are habitat requirements that are dealt. Habitats need 4 basic things: types of habitats, proper substrate, the proper humidity, and the proper temperature. The first thing you have to do is to is decide what will house your hermit crab. Aquariums and critter cages work well. Make sure you have something that they cannot escape from and that is big enough to accommodate as many hermit crabs as you wish to have. It needs to have a lid both to protect the hermit crab from escaping and from anything that may fall in.

Substrate is any substance that is purchased for the purpose of lining the aquarium or critter cage. Common substrates include sand, gravel, and coconut fibers. Other types of substrates can be purchased and used. Many pet stores carry alternative types of substrates tot choose from. The substrate should be fairly deep, allowing the hermit crab to bury itself if it chooses.

Two other important aspects of keeping care of a hermit crab are humidity and temperature. Humidity ranges for hermit crabs should fall into a range that is consistent with tropical climates. The same can be said about temperatures, while there are dangerous high temperatures that can kill hermit crabs, the most deadly are the low temperatures. Keeping humidity regulated involves periodic spraying. Keeping the temperature up will also help keep moisture in the air. Keeping the temperature up is easier with a heater for your aquarium.

Once you have determined what type of habitat to create, you must research food types and water requirements. Food and water dishes must go into the habitat. In the fresh water dish, a natural sponge helps to hold water and makes the hermies feel at home. A saltwater dish is also a good addition to the habitat. Different foods are available from fresh veggies to hermit crab food to fish food in pet stores.

Finally, you need to consider other supplies. For example, though climbing toys aren’t required, they are great things to add to your hermit crab habitat to make it more enjoyable for hermit crabs. Other things are needed, like spare hermit crab shells for them to change into as they grow.

The biggest key to being a responsible hermit crab owner is to be a resourceful person. Learn all the information you can about your potential pet that you can. Knowledge will increase your chances for helping your hermit crab to stay healthy and happy.
