Discount Vacation Packages: Perfect for Large Families

In our large and boisterous family, we often find that vacationing can be difficult, especially when trying to "please all the people, all the time." But our annual vacations are so important to the family--we all need the break and it's the only real time the whole family can get together and enjoy themselves, without the constraints and hassle of each activity being centered around a holiday. We prefer group travel to everyone converging at someone's house and putting all the burden on them. With the economy the way it is, most of us are all finding it difficult to take off from work and pool the money for what is usually a pretty pricey get-away, so this year we all agreed to entertain the notion of discount vacation packages.

Not having really searched for group travel deals before, I went to the first place I knew to look - the Internet. You wouldn't believe all the deals that are offered, from family travel packages for awesome U.S. destination to discount cruises around the Caribbean. The more I looked around, the more options I found...and because we have such a large family, the group travel rates were really low, and only got lower as our numbers grew. Before we had even decided on the destination for our 2008 family excursion, we had 18 people going! After much debate, the entire group settled the question of where to go via democratic vote. We decided on a 5-night stay in Savannah, GA followed by a 5-night Carnival Cruise to Key West and the Bahamas! You can't imagine how excited everybody was.

Some people don't like discount vacation packages because they don't allow a lot of flexibility. For a big group like ours, structure is actually a good thing--it keeps us all entertained and engaged, and there's usually something for everyone. That's the good thing about group travel deals like cruises and such, there are so many different activities going on at any given time, most people would be hard-pressed not to find something to do. In fact, the closest I've every seen my family to achieving that "everyone is completely happy" status, is when we went on our trip to Savannah and the Bahamas.

If you've ever been skeptical about the services and accommodations provided on discount cruises, I have to say that everything, at least for our trip, was top notch. The reason cruises and discount travel packages are sometimes offered at cheaper rates isn't because it's an experience of lesser quality, but because either you're taking last-minute tickets that couldn't be sold, or you're qualifying for group travel rates because you have a larger party taking the vacation. Either way, rest assured that the quality of your experience isn't going to be jeopardized simply because you're getting a cheaper rate.
