DVD Copying Not As Universal As Previously Thought

By: Isaiah Henry

Movie executives are wasting needless energy worrying about DVD ripping. The big players in the movie industry have long been concerned that DVD ripping would rob them of massive profits. As it turns out, they need not worry about it. In fact, DVD ripping is not a common practice; not at all. A recent study conducted by the NPD Group revealed that less than 2% of computer owners (with internet connection) ever engage in the process of DVD ripping with the intent being resale. Even with various software programs available, Isofter and many others, and equipment readily available for purchase it is just not being done widely.

Fear of losing huge amounts of money is widespread in the movie industry due, in large part, to the losses the music industry has suffered. Music is not being ripped and sold however; it is being shared via peer-to-peer file sharing sites which you can find all over the internet. It is true music executives report lost profit revenues in the Billions of dollars, but that is because sites like Kaza and Limewire ( along with many others) are allowed to operate legally at the present time. No such site exists where peers can share movies.

Are you wondering why DVD ripping has not become widespread? If you are, you are not alone. Mr. Crupnick revealed the two reasons it has not - which the study revealed-include the general publics perception that it is a time-consuming endeavor. Many individuals were also worried about the impact of DRM (Management of Digital Rights) on DVD ripping. DVD ripping is not slow, actually, with the right equipment and a fast internet connection, the process is completed in about fifteen minutes. Even in a society that relies on fast everything, fifteen minutes is not a lot of time.

What is DRM? DRM, or Management of Digital Rights, is a set of measures taken by movie content owners to control how digital data and/or hardware is obtained and utilized. It also covers the limitations put in place by such owners with regard to a single or precise digital work or machine. Many people remain confused about the protection of copyrights with the limitations put in place by DRM. The measures in place have nothing to do with copyright infringement. Instead, DRMs regulations enforce the protection against the unlawful use of DVD ripping when it is performed with the sole intent of resale. DRM is more interested in keeping the DVD ripping business to a minimum, so the movie business does not lose large sums of money like the music industry has.

It is understandable that the motion picture industry does not want to end up in the same boat with the music industry. Every business, needless to say, is interested in realizing the most profits then can. The prospect of peer-to-peer sharing sites being developed for sharing movies should be a greater concern to the execs in the movie business than the on the small number of people who rip DVDs.
