Consider Your Options First Very Carefully Before Getting Whitening Your Teeth

Oral care specialists from Dental Houston warned that patients who want to get teeth whitening treatments so they can have the kind of smiles that Hollywood actors and actresses flash before those glittering cameras that we see in our TV screens should carefully consider their options first. “You have so many teeth whitening treatments to choose from. They are just about everywhere. There are teeth whitening kits that can be easily purchased over-the-counter in leading drug stores. You have cosmetic dentists who promote their services and promise you a life changing smile. It pays to know what these services and products are all about before you plunge into them,” said a dentist in Houston.

Dentists in Houston recalled those days when tooth whitening amounted to advertisements by a couple of toothpastes, and even one chewing gum, that promised brighter smiles. Yet, they never actually delivered? “Those days were an indication that there are some people who really want to have a perfect set of pearly whites,” said one of the dentists, who is also a dental practitioner at Dentistry Houston. “Eventually, we saw it coming. New methods were bound to come along. The next thing you know you have dentists who made molds of your teeth: one upper plate and one lower, which they send to a lab that made trays that fit around your teeth. Although it was expensive, it worked,” the dentist added. Then came the influx of new products that hit the market. Suddenly, the market was flooded with bleaching strips and brush-on whiteners. Everyone wanted to get into the act. “Some people could have easily assumed that these products were safe because they probably have the approval of the Food and Drug Administration. But if you take a closer look at these products, they don’t. That’s because the FDA does not consider teeth whiteners to be drugs. There was no need for approvals. They weren’t necessary,” said an orthodontist in Houston.

The American Dental Association (ADA), said the dentist, has established guidelines for tooth whiteners and will issue a seal of approval for safety and effectiveness. Just like the products fir dental implants in Houston, if the teeth whitening product has an ADA seal, that is a certification that the product won't harm the teeth or gums. It’s an assurance that it will whiten the teeth. Going through the ADA approval process, however, is expensive and time consuming. In fact, a lot of manufacturers rushed into the tooth whitening market without seeking the ADA approval. As of June 2004, no over-the-counter teeth whitening products have earned ADA approval, although many have tried. According to a dentist, the only home products that have earned that seal are the kits that you buy from your dentist. These kits, he explained, are made with the active ingredient carbamide, which is usually 10 percent. “If your dentist thinks you need it, he or she might give you a gel with a higher concentration of carbamide, which may not have ADA approval. Over the counter whiteners are made with hydrogen peroxide, which for some people, makes their teeth more sensitive,” the dentist said.
