Copying DVDs is not always an easy task. You cant just copy the DVD to an empty disk because there are many copyright protections that make this impossible. Even if you copy the files, the content will be damaged. For instance, you might have audio but the video of the original DVD will not be working. This is called copyright protection, right?

Although the idea seems simple, no one can copy any DVD without a special program to deal with encryption and to shrink the data. Because unscrupulous people have made pirated copies to sell illegally, manufacturers have put safeguards embedded in the data, so after the duplicate is made, it may only have audio with no picture or some other major problem.

There are several things you need to know before you start copying DVDs. First, copyright laws do not allow to make a profit from someone elses work. Second, the only case when you can legally copy a DVD is for personal use only.

Now when you know the legal aspects of copying a DVD, you can proceed with copying it. For this, you will need a DVD ripper. Until recently DVDShrink did the job but since it is not maintained anymore, there are many recent protections it is helpless with. All these new protections are the response of manufacturers to malicious people who make unauthorized copies.

However, copying a DVD for personal use is OK. Having in mind the prices of movies and games, the budget of many families does not allow to buy new copies, if the old one breaks.

Making a backup of your favorite DVDs is a necessity. DVDs wear out when you play them. All you need is a good program. Until recently RipitforMe was a great choice but now it cant deal with the latest protections because its development stopped in April 2007. You can try DVD Fab Decrypter or any other program till you find the one that can decrypt, rip and shrink the DVDs for you.

Before much love movie discs become too scratched and starts skipping large portions of data, or quits working altogether, copy any DVD for backup entertainment. For example, kids can play DVD's over and over again, and never get tired of seeing a favorite character. In fact, they memorize the information and love to play along. So, for the youngest to the oldest member of the household, keep a backup copy of the best loved video entertainment.

It is legal to make copies of your favorite DVDs for personal use. You just need to find a program, which can deal with the latest copyright protections and you are on your way to enjoy your beloved movies and games for many years.
