An Initial View of McAfee PC Protection 2007

Antispyware and antivirus software is an essential requirement for the modern PC; so-called "phishing" email messages, containing malicious, or unwanted, software applications that track your Internet browsing preferences, cause your PC to perform poorly, or, more sinisterly, attempt to defraud you out of your personal information are on the increase, along with a host of viruses, Trojan horses and worms that seek to damage your PC. McAfee PC Protection 2007 is an all-in-one security solution for home, or office, PCs, providing extensive, up-to-date protection against all forms of Internet attack.

McAfee PC Protection 2007 Features & Benefits

Despite the levels of protection provided by McAfee PC Protection 2007, which are definitely comprehensive, one of the most noticeable features is the simplicity of its menu structure. The main, Security Centre, menu is structured such that not only the main security features are available within a single mouse click, but also the complementary, supporting features. These include a utility known as Quickclean, a defragmenter, and a task scheduler, all of which add value to the package, and give it the feel of a "rounded" security solution, rather than just an antivirus program. The interface can be customised to "Basic" level, or "Advanced" level, revealing more, sophisticated options. Also worthy of mention is an automatic backup procedure, which allows critical data to be regularly backed up to hard disk, optical disk or USB storage.

With regard to security features, the new McAfee SystemGuard provides constant monitoring of PC activity, and flags up, via a pop up message, any activity which it considers to be suspicious. This also includes behaviour that may be associated with malware, or hacking, regardless of whether or not an explicit virus definition exists. Inbound and outbound firewall protection is similarly provided against malware, including spyware and adware. Spyware, for example, is prevented from installing itself, and even previous spyware attacks can be detected, and their effects rectified. Another new feature, McAfee X-Ray for Windows, also detects, and removes more evasive forms of malware, known as "rootkits", which attempt to "hide" from Windows, and conventional detection techniques, by operating at a low level.

Additional protection against spam, phishing or other malicious activities perpetrated by disreputable websites is provided by McAfee SiteAdvisor. SiteAdvisor uses information gleaned by McAfee, itself, and from incident reports from the www.hackerwatch.org community to flag websites with a red cross, or a green cross, as an immediate indication of their legitimacy. It is also possible to operate a PC in "stealth" mode, so that its presence on the Internet is not detectable to anyone, including hackers.

Conclusion

McAfee PC Protection 2007 represents a worthwhile upgrade when compared to the previous version, and contains many new, or enhanced, features. Updates are now handled by a download manager – now completely standalone, unlike the previous version which relied on ActiveX – which can be configured to perform updates to all components of the package automatically, without user intervention of any kind. This means that protection is always up-to-date, and effective, albeit at the cost of a slight performance overhead, from constantly running, background processes.
