Alcoholism Is No Longer Just A Family Secret

Is the surgery on your back really necessary?
Are you a first time patient for your back pain? Have you already had surgery and are being told you need more? Make sure you are fully informed about the necessity of your procedure before you make the final decision. For some, knowing what to decide is virtually impossible unless they are themselves able to research the issue, and wade through the myriad of medical terminology that is out there. Do you know the differences between the many back surgery options out there?
There are approximately five major types of spine surgery; the list includes Discectomy, Foramenotomy, Spine Fusion, Laminectomy, and finally, a more uncommon surgery known as Spinal Disc Replacement. For those who have experienced any spine surgery in the past, this list of names may sound familiar, as some are needed in conjunction of other, however, if this is the first consultation you have ever had in regards to your back pain, then this list will be nothing more than further medical jargon. What you as the patient are relying on is your doctor and his or her professional opinion. Unfortunately, too often a patient will rely on the word of their specialist simply because of that, you go expecting the doctor to know what they are talking about, especially someone that specialized in that field.
Is spine surgery the only option? The dilemma with this question is that with each specialization in medicine also comes a specialization in the treatment of the issue. What this means for a patient is that what one doctor believes is the best treatment for the patient is not what another may find to be the best treatment. The bottom line is that no surgery comes without risk, and because of that, those who are told that they need surgery should ask for a second opinion. Moreover, a second opinion is what a patient is entitled to, as the patient makes the final decision in the end, and not the doctor. For many people out there though, how to ask about a second opinion about spine surgery is either very intimidating, or even unknown to them that there are other opinions out there.
More often than not, a patient won’t ask for a second opinion. Why would that be? Mostly a patient either does not know that they should ask, that there are other opinions out there, or they are also embarrassed, or afraid to ask. How you to know which options are best for your health? One of the most important things to remember, especially for those first time patients, is that spine surgery is rarely done as the first treatment for a back problem. There are many conservative treatments out there to try before turning to surgery. Some of these treatments include physical therapy through your local hospital or clinic, and in some cases, chiropractic manipulations, and even acupuncture can be a way to pre-treat many back conditions. Remember, take control of your health and ask for a second opinion!
