Agoraphobia – A Horrible, Life Changing Anxiety Condition

Posted By: | Posted On: | Article ID:

Agoraphobia is a form of mental disorder. Individuals who have agoraphobia tend to avoid certain places. Although the origin of the name (agora=marketplace, phobia=fear) suggests that the only crowded locations such as marketplaces could bring out the panic, the fact is, it does not really matter whether these places are wide-open or not. As long as the patient has memories of a similar location or situation, they have a chance of suffering from a panic attack.

In general, panic attacks are caused by certain triggers. In this case, the new triggers are created each time when the patient has a panic attack. He/She then remembers the place, which then becomes a trigger. From then on, whenever the patients find themselves in similar circumstances that might provoke a panic attack.

A patient who suffers from agoraphobia is aware of this. That is why they tend to avoid places where there is any chance that a panic attack may occur. Even if a full blown panic attack does not happen, they may still have the unpleasant feelings of anxiety. And as we all know, those feelings can only produce even more stress, which is very unhealthy.

Everyone who is affected by agoraphobia will find that as time passes by, there will be more and more places he/she cannot visit. That is because the number of triggers increases over time, whenever he/she encounters a new panic attack. If left untreated, the sufferers may find themselves with no other option but to stay at home.

This will cause many problems in patient's life. For instance, he/she might not be able to visit some places, even if their work requires them to go. Their social life might become non-existent because they tend to avoid socializing. As a result, the overall quality of life will start to decline, and the patient's life will become miserable.

So, an individual who suffers from agoraphobia should seek a help ASAP. There are 3 commonly used types of treatments out there.

The first type of treatment is psychotherapy. Psychotherapy sessions are conducted by qualified mental health professionals and will help to remove the triggers which are causing the panic attacks. Different patients may respond to this type of treatment in a different way. Some may be cured totally, while others will find their health improving. Please take into the account that the more severe the condition, the more time is required for therapy to have some results.

Another type of treatment is to take drugs. Medication is often essential because the effects are much faster visible. Taking right drugs in appropriate doses can help the patients to perform their daily duties. Medication is often used together with psychotherapy sessions.

The third type of treatment are the self help methods. These methods are developed by people who have at some stage suffered from agoraphobia, and have since recovered from the disorder. They have put out the information about their recovery process in a program.

People who suffer from agoraphobia should watch carefully what works for them. Obviously, different patients require different types of approach. Agoraphobia can be cured when the right treatment is applied.
