A Look At Kefalonia

Kefalonia is one of the prevalent of the Ionian Islands situated on the west side of the Greek mainland . Kefalonia can be spelt in many different ways and some of these ways include Cephallonia, Kefallonia and Cephalonia. Many people believe that the island is said to be named after Cephalus, who was a person from Greek Mythology and was the son of Hermes and Herse.

Kefalonia is physically a beautiful island with mountain ranges, deep caves and vegetation. It is also deep in history. In 1864 Kefalonia was reunited with the rest of Greece after being under the leadership of many different countries over the years.

1953 for any inhabitant of the island will be remembered as a time when a series of catastrophic earthquakes hit the island, one of them recording a colossal 7.3 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake ruined a large quantity of homes and resulted in millions of pounds in damages, and a vast majority of people who lived on the island left soon after to nearby islands to start a new life. There are remarkable signs still on the island such as ruined buildings that have been left untouched as a monument to the 1953 disaster.

As one of the larger Greek islands Kefalonia gets plenty of visitors each year during peak periods mainly of English and Italian holidaymakers as these are both nearby and this has been increased since the release of a film that was filmed on the island of Kefalonia in 2001.

Most tourists tend to visit location such as Lassi for their holiday or getaway due to its lively impression that is idyllic for all kinds of holidaymakers. With restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets lining both sides of the main coastal road so you won’t get bored. If you enjoy walks on the beaches Lassi has the best long sweeping sandy beaches and winding bays that will make for romantic evening strolls.

Many of the beaches on the island are among the best on all the Greek islands put together. With abnormal rocky coastlines and spectacular harbours Kefalonia brings scenery and relaxation to your getaway . If you are engrossed in exploring the island, there are regular cruises and trips that take you to other parts of the island and nearby islands.

If you enjoy scuba diving there are many instructors on the island that will make your break a more memorable time leaving you wanting more. You don’t have to be fully qualified or experienced, even if you’re a novice you will get the chance to discover a completely different element. Choose from wreck diving and cave diving and see some startling sites that will make your holiday one to remember for years to come. If you really wanted to you can also work towards earning a recognised scuba-diving certificate.
